Folks here have heard me talk a few times now about the growing scourge of paranoia across our land. It started right after 9/11, I distinctly recall, with Halloween events (of ALL THINGS) being cancelled due to 'security concerns'. As if Al Qaeda would attack a childs trick or treat event? (sigh) ..still, paranoia had begun to take hold and it was coming to be seen ..even then.
Now? it has become something like a true sickness among the people in positions of authority and leadership. It borders on clinical mental illness, in my view, and has our nation living like every day is the last one we'll ever know in normal times.
There is an old saying...."Paranoia will destroy ya!". Truer words have rarely been spoken, in describing a thought our leaders should embrace today...because it is destroying them...and us.
Now, reactivating Cheyenne Mountain isn't the issue. I thought they were idiots to ever deactivate the complex. It is needed in our world for a secure military command center, as it was designed to serve as. However... this obsession with EMP attack, and the near fixation with the worst case scenarios is where illness comes into the picture, IMO.

Months? Yes.... Years? Well, not unless the whole planet has told us to go screw off and enjoy the 1800's. 9 out of 10 dead?? Who the hell thinks like this?? That isn't a talking head, but the head of the "Task Force" looking at this question.
We have people here on HH who lived the worst years of the Cold War. Years where Americans KNEW..as FACT...there were missiles aimed, armed and sitting on GO to fire with a 7-12 minute warning time to a megaton blast coming over EVERY major city on both coasts, in to a few hundred miles ...damn near simultaneously. Death during that period wasn't a question of if, but how painful it may be...and God have mercy, the fear we may SURVIVE such a strike. That would have been the worst outcome, IMO.
The area I grew up in (Southern California) was called a "Total Overkill Zone", and I recall that term clearly, over 30 years later. I also recall WHY it was accurate, and that is because Los Angeles would have lost physical elevation by the end of the first attacks. Nuclear Drilling was the goal there (and would Erase Cheyenne Mountain the same way). There is a military facility in the mountain that has the Hollywood sign. Beneath that repeater/radio relay center on top of the ridge between Los Angeles and the San Fernando valley is a very large complex built in the early cold war years and designed to be something like a mini-version of Cheyenne. Well..VERY mini-version ..but same concept for protection.
Which is where drilling came in for the tactic to counter it
This all matters to mention, because EVEN THEN ...with those SCARY facts to grow up with, and know as a child? No one EVER estimated a 90% loss rate for American civilian populations, even after a full global thermonuclear war.
90% loss rate is panic talk, and fear mongering to a level that IS mental illness. We're led by sick people ......and we're heading into sick places by it.

New concerns are being raised that the nation's electrical grid and critical infrastructure are increasingly vulnerable to a catastrophic foreign attack -- amid speculation over whether officials are eyeing a former Cold War bunker, inside a Colorado mountain, as a "shield" against such a strike.

"What it could do, these various threats, is black out the U.S. electric grid for a protracted period of months or years," warned Peter Pry, executive director of the EMP Task Force, a bipartisan congressional commission. "Nine out of ten Americans could die from starvation, disease and societal collapse, if the blackout lasted a year."
