I guess this is one of those little details in the modern world which many don't give thought to. Why would we, unless we've had some experience as a result of the issue?
Where DO you go to use a restroom when you are on a schedule set to minutes, and in a vehicle that can't simply be parked 'anywhere'? (never mind the bus load of people in back) Up to now? It sounds like it has been quite a mess, literally.
The state Department of Labor and Industries fined King County Metro $3,500 on Wednesday for failing to provide bus drivers with unrestricted access to restrooms. Drivers, men and women alike, told investigators disturbing stories about using coffee cups and bottles to relieve themselves because they felt pressure to stick to their scheduled routes, department spokesman Tim Church said Saturday.
That is obscene to imagine, and it's wrong that anyone ever be put in that position. We 'had ways' of solving that issue on 18 wheelers, but privacy was a whole different world, as were the options for containers and methods. It was workable there, as it had to be. On a city bus?? Umm.. Where? How? THAT is what they may be doing when seemingly busy with something up front? Oh..goodness.
"Some told us there were — I'm looking for the right word here — urine-soaked driver's seats because they felt they had no other alternative," Church said.
The story explains that with new policies supposedly in place now, all should be right as rain as these problems are solved ..or something? I'm happy they are working on it, but if I were a bus driver? I'd wonder just what $3,500 measly dollars in fines to a municipal agency has really changed beyond some bad P.R.?
