This museum even has an old 1946 un-modified Swift serial #291... The modified Super swifts have big motors, sliding canopies, and sticks instead of a control wheel.. Much prettier IMO but even the old stock Swift will turn many heads.. There were only 750 Swifts still flying back when I was in the Swift Association.
Myself and two other guys started the Red River Swift wing back in the day.. (it still has annual fly-ins around the Dallas Ft. Worth area)... Insurance and the tripling of prices of anything that has airplane part stamped on it has driven many away from general aviation.. Not to mention close to $5 for one gallon of aviation fuel.. My last Super Swift carried 60 gallons and I could get to altitude and burn a little less than 8gph all the while doing 190mph.. I once did 246 mph across the ground from Oklahoma City to Houston with some really good winds... I think I was at 9 or 11,000 ?
Funny actually for I have gone 60 knots and thought I was doing pretty good while I have also gone over 750 knots across the ground thinking what a slow POS! Relativity first hand..
Some beautiful old aircraft there .... funnest rides had were on the old hueys at treetop level .... ( one the pilots that knew gave me unofficial .... off the record lessons how to fly the hueys .... ) one regret is never went to get pilots license ....
