I'm not a Power, but I can tell you my own solution.
There are two places (right-hand column and bottom left of the page) where you can click on "Recent Threads", but this actually means "most recently updated threads".
So my own approach is to click on "Recent Posts" (next to the bottom Recent Threads) and work backwards.
That automatically brings you to any new threads which have been started as far back as you care to go.

I use this method as well, this way I can either use the "action" pane to bookmark and read through later or post to add it to my "participated" threads.
In order to see the threads that you have recently participated in, simply go to the top right and click onto the 'PARTICIPATED' button located just below your username/log out
When you click on it a menu will drop down and you can scroll through the threads
I will admit, it could be larger for those of us with bad eyes. LOL
Also on the right hand side of a page you will see the most active up to date threads

@snarky412, @solarius,
I'll offer yet another path to "Newness." Try clicking on one of the bars that has the category title on it. I think "Hernando's Hideaway" is the top one. It will cause all of the material in that category to be "swallowed up." When there is a new post anywhere in Hernando's Hideaway, the words "There's a new post here." will appear next to the category title.
Click on the bar and the boards in the category will open up, and if there is a new post in that board you'll see the word "New" on the folder on the left hand side. Click on that board and the threads will appear, again with the word "new" over on the left.
Choose what ever method pleases you.
In fact, a cute little bunny has just supplied us with a program which provides another way to see new activity. I haven't installed it yet, but I will in a few minutes.
