I build worlds as one of my hobbies. Sure, I'm strange, but it keeps me off the streets and out of trouble. Depending on how ambitious one is, world-building can range from a single fictitious planet all the way up to an entire SciFi universe. An example of the latter, with a large number of participants involved in the construction would be the "Orion's Arm" universe.
What I have done here is to create a system over time, which I will use as an example for aspiring world builders. The first post will be an overview of the entire solar system of "Khalamzadar". the post following that will be a more detailed look at one of the planets in that system, "Kalamzadar 4". Following that, I'll make nut and bolts posts of the software and methods used in creating those planets that make up that system.
Although I have already mentioned that this system has been created over time, note should be made that it is not yet finished. For example, the careful observer will not that there are not yet any moons at all in the system. That will be rectified over time, but it won't be over night.
This particular system was used in a story written at TOS, but it was not created for that story - it wasn't really created for anything at all other than the pure effort of creating it. The character mentioned in the paperwork as owning this system was a character in the story there, and that character has been transported to a story here, but a far different story. Think of him as being in the Witness protection program, or incognito. Same character, different name.
This thread, however, is not about the story. it's about World Building, to create backgrounds for stories. You can do it, too. it's not hard - the computer does most of the work - it's just time consuming, as you test and try to push the software to it's limits in creating and visualizing your worlds.
