The term "demon" is used to describe a malignant spirit, and comes to us predominantly from the New Testament authors. However, it is still not certain as to whether or not demons are considered to be explicit from the Devil and his fallen angels.

Most of what was described in earlier times as "demon possession" would today be diagnosed as some sort of mental illness, and the patient would most likely be numbed with pills and thrown in a psych ward.
Nevertheless, the Roman Catholic Church still have a few cases of possession where they have continued to perform exorcisms.
The source link above lists the many species of demons, and gives a list of names as to what each one "specializes" in.
Today you don't need a priest to preform an exorcism. There are trained demonologists that can expel these evil spirits from those who become possessed.
One such person is Jerry Williams, whom I had the pleasure of meeting online through a mutual friend. He offers training to anyone who might be interested in learning how to cast out demons, if anyone out there is interested.
Jerry has given many, many online interviews and has his own web page on Facebook: www.facebook.com/JerryWilliamsDemonologist?fref=ts
Here is one of his discussions on Blog Talk Radio. He discusses the different church doctrine views concerning possession and exorcisms.
Very interesting, but don't listen just before you go to bed!!

Demon possession - that is, a human who has become inhabited or "taken over" by a demon and who cannot, consequently, exercise his own will - is noted in the New Testament, specifically in Mark, Chapter 5, ver. 12. Josephus also mentions a method of exorcism prescribed by Solomon, which had "prevailed or succeeded greatly among them down to the present time." Unfortunately, Josephus does not describe the method used.
