The Downfall of North America, is history repeating itself?
Back in January of 2014, author Evan Andrews wrote an interesting article for the History Channel, titled “8 Reasons why Rome fell”, thus providing a list of probable facts for its historical downfall. Rome had been a super power in its time, no one would doubt that and M. Andrews goes on to enumerate the reasons why such an Empire that had a five hundred years run would come to an end, due to its almost foreseeable missteps.
I would like to expand on M. Andrews’ excellent research and see how it fits in all too well with today’s history and, in particular, when we have a closer look at how our societies have been run by our North American governments, for the last few decades.
1. Invasions by Barbarian tribes
The most straightforward theory for Western Rome’s collapse pins the fall on a string of military losses sustained against outside forces.
Since 9/11, it seems quite obvious that we’ve had a string of military losses, the ongoing ‘war on terror’ being the biggest failure of all times. While we cross the sea in order to go fight a ghostly enemy on shores thousands of miles away, the same enemy is coming through our borders under the guise of hoping to become a North American citizen, all the while planning nefarious plots in secrecy. No one can refuse entry under suspicions, and to be perfectly frank, they cover who they are perfectly well, yet we ignore this same notion and spend billions to track them down on their own territories.
2. Economic troubles and overreliance on slave labor
Even as Rome was under attack from outside forces, it was also crumbling from within thanks to a severe financial crisis.
The economy has never been as bad as it is now since the great depression. Salaries remain to an all time low while inflation skyrockets like never before. Outsourcing to foreign countries where working values are close to inexistent is the new standard to cut costs and avoid life threatening bankruptcies. Our North American countries are, let us stop denying it, on the slow and treacherous road to financial perdition as we, gradually, crumble from within.
3. The rise of the Eastern Empire
East and West failed to adequately work together to combat outside threats, and the two often squabbled over resources and military aid.
Division. The historical key to failure. Our North American countries haven’t divided themselves like it happened in Rome with its East / West division that caused its downfall, no. Our division is much more subtle than that and it’s called Left /Right division. While we gloat at our achievements, we spend our energy debating issues that seem irrelevant compared to the real issues that are at hand. The North American citizens no longer have a say in anything and simply choose to argue amongst themselves on those political decisions. On the intelligence front, the division is still present and strong. We are indeed divided, in our values and our beliefs, while our enemies unite.
4. Overexpansion and military overspending
With such a vast territory to govern, the empire faced an administrative and logistical nightmare.
Now compare that statement with what we do today, a worldwide military spread. The territories to govern, this is historical, have never been so vast, so far and so dangerous. Overexpansion is an understatement here and the military overspending has sent us in a financial dive from which we will never recover.
5. Government corruption and political instability
If Rome’s sheer size made it difficult to govern, ineffective and inconsistent leadership only served to magnify the problem.
Should I really write something here to support that claim?
6. The arrival of the Huns and the migration of the Barbarian tribes
The Romans grudgingly allowed members of the Visigoth tribe to cross south of the Danube and into the safety of Roman territory, but they treated them with extreme cruelty.
As more and more terrorist plots are executed, or dismantled – when we’re lucky - , the racism card grows at an alarming rate. Some North American citizens already treat them with a certain cruelty, ranking them out like men and women of less values, much like our slaves from our not that distant past, downgrading them to the status of animals all the while claiming that it is to protect our land. Slippery slope.
7. Christianity and the loss of traditional values
The decline of Rome dovetailed with the spread of Christianity, and some have argued that the rise of a new faith helped contribute to the empire’s fall.
In today’s world, unless someone is blind, it is rather easy to spot which Faith is on the rise. While Christianity is becoming less and less attractive, while our traditional values are being replaced with moral ones that hold no grounds per say, Islam is gaining territories.
8. Weakening of the Roman legions
Unable to recruit enough soldiers from the Roman citizenry, emperors like Diocletian and Constantine began hiring foreign mercenaries to prop up their armies.
For this last point on the list, I will not claim that we lack soldiers, we don’t. What I will claim is this; we lack foreign support. Our coalitions are at an all time low and countries willing to join North American plans are becoming less and less enthusiast as time goes by. Our arrogance keeps us believing that we don’t need anyone, they need us. The Romans thought the same.
The Downfall of North America, is history repeating itself?
Unless you are in denial, unless you have chosen to plant your head in the sand in order not to see the world around you, the answer to this question is a most probable yes.
