Traffic stop and a warning ticket issued for going 5 miles over the speed limit. Everything cool until the police requested to search the car and find a young man's life savings which was being carried personally to move to California and schooling.... or so the story goes..
If true, and at first glance I believe it is, this is a messed up story. And it's not the first time this has happened. The lesson is...don't carry large amounts of cash. Whether it's cops or crooks, this kid set himself up for failure.
Now they have people tattling on others for depositing anything over $5000.00 dollars in a bank account. WTF!?
Beware the man who has one gun, he probably knows how to use it.
Who determines what a large amount of money is? Is it 1K, 2K, 5K or 10K? When I went on vacation to VA before moving out here I have an interesting experience. I had 2K in my pocket for the weeks expenses. When going through the airport they tell you to take everything out of your pockets. I didn't know it meant cash as well. I hadn't flown in many years, way before the TSA. You would have thought I was the head of a cartel. Interestingly they knew through the scanner just how much I had, then I got taken to a room where I was searched, wiped for traces of drugs, made to wait then warned to never do it again.
Just who the hell are these communist bastards they can do this at almost gun point. They worked in a team with one having his hand on his gun the whole time. I have always been a cash person, WTF do you do when you have made a purchase, dinner for example and the bank refuses the card and it isn't your fault? It isn't like the banks never make a mistake. I hadn't had a CC in many years until I met my wife. She is CC crazy, now I have to carry a friggin wallet full of plastic cards. It used to be nicely folded money around ID and a rubber band in my front pocket.
I don't think it's the police, TSA, or governments responsibility to check peoples money, for Christ sake they are the biggest drug dealers on the planet. What if I was going to buy a used car, or a used motorcycle like many of us do and the seller will only take cash? And like this kid was just driving down the road minding my own business and get pulled over with 10K in my pocket? How much money is it going to cost to get it back? This is just more controlling BS in an effort to get someones money for free. We make jokes about China, Russia, being communist countries and they way they do things to people with arrest, asset forfeitures, unlawful detaining, tell whats the difference now? They record and listen to everything we do, stop us at check points in our travels asking questions, checking ID. How is the United States any different?
Sorry. Sounds like a clear violation of the 4th Amendment to me.
Cops are treated very special. They have great responsibility ... and they should be at extreme risk from time-to-time. I think they should be subject to the revocation of their citizenship where the Bill of Rights is concerned. Period.
Make a spectacle out of stripping one cop of his/her citizenship ... and banishing him/her from US soil. Let's see what happens then.
This is unacceptable, period. When we moved from FL, my grandmother had her trusty little portable safe with her, with several grand in it. She never trusted anything but paper money & checks, though she did switch to a debit for the move for the easy record keeping of purchases (on the statements) The cash in the safe was solely for if she lost her debit card & couldn't write a check (many places refuse checks now) It was a back-up in the event we needed another method of payment. Had we been pulled over & her money questioned & SEIZED, I'd have had a cow. Never rely solely on plastic, it's easily lost. Have a cash reserve, especially when moving across the country. You never know, you may end up actually needing to use it.

The thing I forgot to mention in my post was when I told them I had 2K in my pocket they said they already knew. Because the little metal strip in the new bills tells the scanner what and how much. It's a new world out there and its not citizen friendly. To say the least I was very surprised.
Having a cash reserve is good, especially when moving across the country. But $10,000.00 dollars is a tad bit excessive in my opinion. Having that much is asking for trouble. From cops or crooks.
I'm a cash only person, no credit cards whatsoever, but I refuse to carry that much cash on a trip. If I need to buy something that's expensive, I'll go to the bank and get a certified check made. That can be cancelled at least if lost or seized.

I agree you are asking for trouble, but it shouldn't be from the cops. Only from crooks, thieves, liars... You know the Obama administration.
I think we need a movement in this nation to make NO mean NO.
Not sex, or dating or anything else. No... THIS outrage is what I mean. I watch those COPS type shows and its the same thing. Whenever I hear someone say 'no' to having their car searched? You KNOW where it is going next. One of two things will then happen.
#1. You will wait, however long it takes, for a K-9 unit to become available for an outer search of your vehicle
Or..
#2. You will watch your vehicle sit on a warrant or, worst case, be "temporarily secured" (i.e.... TOWED AND SEIZED) until a warrant can be served to search the car.
In other words? The 4th Amendment means absolutely nothing, whatsoever. No? You can't say NO. Not in any functional way. You WILL be searched, one way or another, once they decide they are curious. Sooner or later....hard or easy....you WILL be searched.
We need that movement to establish NO MEANS NO and it isn't just in bed with a hot date where NO *MEANS* NO!
....otherwise...our rights mean nothing but window dressing so we "feel" like we have choices, where we actually have none at all.

His azz got 'profiled' Not sure what his buddy looked like, but the cop for some reason was suspicious of them
What is a bitch is that the cops DO NOT have to prove it's from selling drugs, they just take it saying it is, which is bullshit IMO
Yes, some cases it is but not always
The kids money just went to buy the PD new computers probably
Most of the people we work around only deal in cash, legit earnings -- no credit cards, no bank accounts My husband carries cash, a few hundred sometimes more, depending on if we are fixin to buy something I carry any where from $80-$200 on me at all times
When traveling like we do, you better have cash on hand for road emergencies
Somewhere around here I have a series of photographs I took of forty thousand dollars, in cash, in a couple nice little stacks. It's amazing how SMALL a space that much takes in 100's too.. heh.. I'm not rich, but it was an indulgence while executing my fathers estate.
If a cop like that had pulled me over? Well..I suppose I would have gotten my money back, being able to quickly show a court matter ongoing ..but even that? Wow..I can't feel 100% certain.
Don't EVEN get me started on how F-uped this is!!! Nothing gets my blood boiling faster than seeing how "certain people" take advantage of their power... which is why I usually stay out of the political forums.

That's just wrong, to even have to wonder.
Once you're in 'the system' you would have gotten your money back at the same expense that kid got his back. It's the Robin Hood story ... and they're getting away with it. The only way to antagonize 'the sheriff' is via ambush. The guy with the paintbrush is telling the story his way.
Everybody involved there should have lost their right to live in America. Due Process has been turned into a farce. Time to take the power out of the hands it's been entrusted to.
Come to think of it ... isn't that sort'a the reason we all wound up Hernandos? -Chuckle

at least he didn't do anything stupid to get him killed, dying for the dollar because the cops took it from you. Kind of stupid to take that kind of cash with him but as far as I know there still isn't a law making that illegal. having money makes you suspicious when you aren't dressed for the occasion. A lot needs to change in our country but its so coagulated with bullshit the only responsible way to do things is really to start from scratch again with modernity in mind.
The mean, nasty-ass honey badger in a bar near you!
