Just in case you weren't aware, Bill Cosby, "All American Dad" and spokesman for pudding pops, has been accused of sexual misconduct. It was in the distant past, apparently, so he will not be charged.
Investing in others always carries a risk. Having idols is dangerous because everyone has flaws, everyone does things that may not be appropriate.
Lately, however, it appears that people are taking great delight in knocking down past heroes, role models, idols.
Perhaps it has something to do with his message.
Cosby has been an advocate for personal responsibility in the black community. Maybe if he was touting a different message, it wouldn't have even made the news.
i also agree with Dirk on this matter. Cosby is a very outspoken man, and... correct me if I'm wrong but isn't he also a republican? At least he seems to me to at the very least espouse more of those ideologies which aren't always as popular with the mainstream.
I like him, and his person has been unassailable... there has never been even a speck in his life to blow out of proportion or it would have been done way long before now.
Personally, I see this as slander and honestly don't believe it of him.
Indeed Dirk. The same thought occurred to me. He has pissed of some libs and race hate peddlers so severely, they probably blew gaskets and went off like the Tasmanian devil a few times in the past. He's told some hard truths in a way only he could and get away with ..and some have vowed to destroy him some day. Some seems to have come, as it's 'dog-pile on Cosby time'.
I read the accusations from the first one when it first broke...and I would want to note something important here. Cosby is a Super-Star of the world class variety for his accomplishments. This we all see and know, and so its easy to imagine him doing dirty deeds and being covered for it. However....He wasn't ALWAYS a Super-anything, and our nation hasn't always been anything remotely close to the race tolerance we are now.
Those factors BOTH play into this, in my view, because he wasn't quite the same legend (altho not a starving actor either) back then ...he also would have been counting on no one taking issue with the race side of it, in thinking it may HAVE happened. I think that could have been explosive in dangerous ways back then, and a very good reason why I don't believe he'd have done it. Its his life, he may have risked...not merely his career. I don't quite see it.
I guess that there are two separate issues -- whether this stuff happened or not, and what is the motivation with the media jumping all over it. I have a hard time believing that those unhappy with Cosby's stand on personal responsibility would find a bunch of women to make false accusations against him -- the numbers involved would indicate quite the conspiracy, and I just don't put a lot of credibility in large conspiracies.
There is a question, in my mind, as to whether he really did what he's being accused of, or whether the "tale grew in the telling." One of the reasons that I posted the "Spanish fly" bit was that things were different back then, and behaviour that we now see as abhorrent wasn't so much fifty years ago.
So, then, the question becomes, as I said "what's with the sudden attention" on him? And that I don't know -- has he weighed in on Ferguson? Has he done anything of note lately? The "black me need to be better fathers" thing was from a number of years ago, wasn't it?
In the end, I'm inclined to believe that it's getting the coverage that it is because he's a celebrity, not because of anyone's agenda.

I think it may be simpler than any vast conspiracies. Every celebrity gets a % of things run against them by people seeking money, grudges or whatever else. It doesn't surprise me he's had women in his past accuse him. Others have had women claim more including kids that weren't. Is there anything where physical proof was documented? That would mean more to me than a dozen women showing up now with accusations from the 1980's.
He's got deep pockets, won't be around a whole lot longer by nature and age alone, and this is a closing window to take a shot for a payoff or settlement. See how many turn to lawsuit, and that may say a lot too.
The fact he's told criminals they have themselves to blame for their problems and their race isn't an excuse these days is what makes him unpopular enough in the right political circles to make it a safe and feasible shot to take, IMO. I don't know how much it would be directly motivated that way, but he's not popular to defend in the modern climate, to say the least.
In his autobiography, (Pete Townshend) describes how the media storm about the scandal began, saying: ‘If I’d had a gun I would have shot myself, just to escape the lynching.’
Asked how seriously he considered suicide, Townshend said it was ‘only for a moment’ but added that he had despaired because he was not given any sense that the truth behind his actions would come out.
He added that he had since been plagued by fears that the publicity could lead to baseless further accusations.
Townshend explained: ‘Imagine three or four girls coming along and saying, “I had sex with Pete in the Sixties, when he was 25 and I was 12”. I know it didn’t happen, but when you’re a pop star people say all kinds of things.
‘I get lots of pictures of children with big noses who claim I’m their dad.’

I have to agree with Mr. Gently on this one he has touted personal responsibility for some time now, and this isn't the first time they have gone after him. He would do much better to talk trash and not pay his taxes like sharpton. I wonder if Wesley Snipes is pissed that Sharpton gets a deal still owing millions and Snipes spent 3 years in prison. You just have to be on the right side of the political ideology of the time. Thats why Charlie Rangel got investigated and got off with a hand slap he to was on the right side. To be conservative and black is to be ostracized by your own minority.
Just goes to show how the Media can help or hurt ones case
It used to be 'Innocent' until proven 'Guilty'
But with the way the MSM spins this crap anymore, one is 'Guilty' until proven 'Innocent' And then you're still sh#t out of luck, due to your credibility/character being tarnished and dragged through the mud

Absolutely and how do you ever get that back? In some cases it's all out to discredit you to keep quiet. Until you get a retraction, lawsuit, or printed satisfaction it could cost you financially and personally with family with false accusations.

Well, I may not have like what Mel Gibson did, but he could put out some movies!! Apocalypto is one of our all time favorites
Unfortunately, that movie was his downfall, the stress of making it and the elements Of Mother Nature delaying the filming and going over budget That's when he claims he spiraled out of control and started drinking again after I believe 20 years being sober
But the Media along with the help of Hollywood [Spielberg and the like] ruined his career Hollywood has shunned him & no one wants to work with him
MSM trashed his name over and over, despite all the good he has done over the 30 years
Even Jon Voight, who is a Conservative, talked about how many actors in Hollywood that are Rep. clam up due to possible repercussion of not getting jobs
I have really lost respect for Spielberg due to his bullying ways...arrogance at it's finest

I haven't seen much worth watching out of Hollywood in a number of years now. When Superman isn't getting drunk and being a jerk, Batman is out being more a villain than a hero.
Crap on our Superheros...and we just won't buy your movies anymore. :P
That is when they aren't doing yet another sequel to yet another franchise that probably went past good taste and decency after part 2. Plenty of them these days.
