I can't make this up, and I put it in the Excesses forum because this is Big Brother on SUPER-steroids.
What the hell business is it of the United States Federal Environmental Protection Agency to know how long I shower in a hotel room, or to be in the business of "modifying" my behavior?
This whole damn country is becoming a warped and sick version of 1984, on a level even Orwell wouldn't have tried for a plot. It would have seemed too far fetched, even in that setting for a book.

By the way, the story specifically notes that the EPA has this under "Water Conservation", "Urban Water Planning", "Sustainable Water Management" for where we should look to find Big Brother schemes in the future. That seems to be the category setting they prefer?
The EPA program also encourages towel and linen re-use in rooms...and again, I ask, WHAT BUSINESS IS IT FOR THE EPA TO KNOW WHAT I DO IN A HOTEL ROOM?
When, and by what specific authority, did that Federal Agency come by the power to do this? When was that power granted them, and under WHICH legislation did that take place?
I guess I missed where the EPA was permitted to become Big Brother with all the privacy care of a proctologist on a free exam day. (Proctologist is NOT in the Google spelling dictionary... Odd omission, eh? I could note something about heads up asses and no one around to help them OUT...but...nvm..heh)
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants hotels to monitor how much time its guests spend in the shower.
The agency is spending $15,000 to create a wireless system that will track how much water a hotel guest uses to get them to “modify their behavior.”

“The proposed work aims to develop a novel low cost wireless device for monitoring water use from hotel guest room showers,” it said. “This device will be designed to fit most new and existing hotel shower fixtures and will wirelessly transmit hotel guest water usage data to a central hotel accounting system.”
The funding is going toward creating a prototype and market analysis for the device. The goal of the project is to change the behavior of Americans when they stay at hotels.
