USS Panay in the Yangtze river if memory serves me right. It was also before the US had declared war. 1937?...1938? It was before Pearl Harbor, that I know.
I did originally type the Peublo, but that was Korea. My mind had it right, but my fingers screwed it up. LOL
I was in the 82d ABN at the time and on a major field exercise. They yanked us out of the woods and off we went after picking up our war stock (ammo, MRE's, etc). We had no idea where we were going at that point. That was of course before cell phones, so there were a lot of pissed off families when there husbands/wives didn't show up at home a couple of days later.
Command would not tell them where they were, but by that time it was on the news so they had a good idea where we were. Kind of hard to keep a secret when a half of a Division disappears overnight.
Same thing happened for Desert Shield.
Beware the man who has one gun, he probably knows how to use it.
