The long search for Happiness!
Richard is a successful doctor, and a family man. He has a beautiful wife, two great kids. Because of some very well thought of investments, he is a multimillionaire. After many years of established routine, he felt empty, exhausted, and sad, basically, he was unhappy. He spoke with his wife Wendy about this and the conversation quickly went sour as she thought he was blaming her for these feelings he was having.
“NO!” He said this is not what I mean; I only need time to figure things out for myself.
Reassured, she made a suggestion to him. “Why don’t you go for a trip alone to find yourself, ever since we’ve been together, you never traveled as you were too busy with school obtaining your Doctorate. And now with the hours you work, you are losing yourself.”
“You should just take time off work and go for as long as you need to obtain the answers you are looking for. We can afford it!” She added.
They both agreed this would be the best solution to this problem. So he began some research to find the “happiest places” on the planet to travel to, because he really thought visiting those place could fill that void inside him. And perhaps show him how to be and stay happy.
So he sat at his computer and began searching for “happy places”. He insisted on this search subject because he just knew that this was his problem, a lack of happiness in his heart!
So after a few hours of research, he found multiple places he could travel to where he should be happier. He made his itinerary, booked his flights/hotels and any other arrangements necessary for his journey! He decided to only stay a day or two at each location to ensure he wasn’t gone too long. Again he was thinking of work.
Before taking off, the family sat together for a nice dinner together as this would be the last time they would see each other for weeks, or maybe even months. Their three kids were present at this dinner and they all had requests for their father.
Glen, the youngest (12yo), is into cameras and always took pictures of everything and anything. He handed one of his cameras and asked his father to take shots of anything he thought was outstanding during his travels.
Their daughter, Julia (17yo), was into meditation and spirituality. She asked her dad to find some nice spots to meditate, handed him a brand new note book, and asked him to write down his experiences in there after each meditation.
Although Richard was not as experienced as them in their hobbies, he agreed to fulfill their requests for them if it would make them happy.
After dinner, the kids returned to their occupancies, while Richard and Wendy kept talking. She looked at him and said: “Be careful and, most importantly come back with a smile!
The next morning, after an intense romantic night, he kissed his wife and kids goodbye and headed to the airport to his first destination:
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
“I have seen this place in movies, it’s one of the best places to have fun and be happy apparently!” he thought.
As he left the airport, he took off on foot sight-seeing. He had red about the Jesus statue on top of Corcovado Mountain and wanted to see it for himself, although he could see it from where he was at that specific moment, he just wanted to get up close to it.
When he got to it, he took a picture right away for his son. And he was proud to take the very first picture of his trip. “CLICK!”
The next day, he visited the Tijuca Forest a little more since he only passed through it to get to the Corcovado Mountain. So he headed that way and came across this beautiful view…”CLICK”, picture # 2 taken.
“What a perfect spot to meditate!” He thought. So he positioned himself, cleared his mind and began. It lasted 15 minutes, all he was able to see was an airplane, so he wrote what he saw and felt in the book Julia gave him! And he headed toward his hotel to get some rest.
The next morning, he headed to the airport for his next destination. During the flight, Richard was thinking about Rio, and he realized that this was not what he was looking for, although he did enjoy himself, he found gifts for his children, and the sights were gorgeous, but he was not happier than when he arrived. He was actually lonely!
Paris France
When he arrived, the first place he wanted to visit was of course the Eiffel Tower. So he went there.
Gorgeous! He said! “I would’ve like to share this moment with the family!” But at least he could immortalize the moment with the picture.
Next stop was one of the most famous monument in Paris, The "Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile". Simply amazing to say the least! Got to take a picture…CLICK!
“He looked up at it and thought “What an imposing structure, its Huge!” But again, it’s not the same when you can’t share the moment with anyone…
Although he felt a bit down because of this, he proceeded. You can’t go to Paris and NOT visit the historic Notre Dame Cathedral.
Now he needed to find someplace nice to meditate as he already had taken a few pictures.
By asking locals, he heard of Albert Khan's "Musée et Jardins". He headed there by taxi to do his meditation.
His jaw dropped when he arrived, the sight was just so inspiring. He said to Cab driver: “I wish my daughter Julia was here, she would have loved this so much.
As he was feeling really lonely in Paris, he had to figure out where he was to head to next. But not before having a meditation in this heavenly place! He sat on a big boulder near a spring and began...
All he could see was his wife and kids in various occasions of their lives. Almost like a photo album!
That's when he snapped out of his meditative state and got up on a bounce! He had just figured out where his next destination was.
He rushed to the airport and caught his plane.
Meanwhile back home, Wendy and the kids were sitting together watching a movie. Glen gets up and heads to the kitchen to get some snacks ready.
"DING! DONG!"
Glen opens the front door and to his surprise...
"DAD!!" he yells while he grabs him into a hug! "I missed you!" said Richard.
Having heard the scream Wendy and Julia ran to join them in a group hug!
"Why did you return so fast honey? Did you find what you were looking for?" Wendy asks.
Richard looks at his wife silently, then at the kids, then says:"You know what honey, as I was ready to travel the globe to clear mind and find happiness, I realized after a short time that I would never find it, that it was a lost cause...No place in the universe can make me happier by itself!"
Wendy's jaw dropped..."What do you mean by that?" she asks wondering why he was sounding so pessimistic.
Richard puts his hands on her shoulders, glances into her eyes and kisses hi wife passionately. then says:
"Happiness cannot be "found" in any location, because I realized that, to me, TRUE happiness is found in the people we make bonds with! After going to two countries, all I could think about is how you all would of loved it there! I was enjoying myself but still felt incomplete. Well, now know that is because I was there alone. Now I want you all go pack you luggage, WE are going on a trip the four of us so julia and I can meditate together, Glen can take pictures to his hearts content. Wendy can enjoy the sights with me and I know that it will be the best trip of our lives!"
Upon his return to work weeks later, Richard decided to reduce his hours at the hospital, and started spending more time with his family. THAT is what he was missing! We don't need to go very far when the thing that makes you the happiest is right in front of you.
They lived happily ever after!
