Oh, what a place to be a scummy liar, and on this topic too!

Now, on ONE hand? I will give this man credit to say he isn't being a Brian Williams about it. To read the story and other statements, he isn't playing or pretending or making stuff up out of whole cloth to cover his actions. THAT might just be the difference here, for what he walks away from and what others have been utterly destroyed by doing.
He also, it could be suggested, was trying to talk creatively in reaching a man in a specific individual situation, where the fudge may have even made a little sense. I mean that to say, he wasn't trying to braggart himself to cameras he wasn't speaking to...but quite possibly trying to make one vet feel a little less lonely and neglected. Does that make it right? Oh HELL NO. Does it make it forgivable?
I dunno...is it ever forgivable to lie about military service? I'd say not. However, I also have to say that given the circumstances and his immediate and plain response to his own screw up? It's as close as case to forgive as I've seen in a long long time.
The White House on the other hand? Jesus...does ANYTHING in dishonesty or scumbaggery even PHASE them?!
(Sourced from a wire report on Breaking News with a 2 hour timeline for the White House quote)
Yes he DID mean to misrepresent it, and even HE doesn't seem to be outright denying that. It was circumstance and situation that comes into play here, and then his unabashed 'apology' without excuse or 'but but but' that others in this Administration have turned into a near art form. It would have been better, IMO, if the White House had said nothing. The VA Secretary seems capable of helping himself...without being hurt by his own team.
Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald has admitted that he lied about serving in the special operations forces in a conversation with a homeless veteran that was caught on camera earlier this year.
McDonald made the claim in January while he was in Los Angeles as part of the VA's effort to locate and house homeless veterans. During the tour, a homeless man told McDonald that he had served in the special operations forces.
"Special forces? What years?" McDonald responded. "I was in special forces." The exchange was broadcast on "The CBS Evening News" Jan. 30. McDonald's misstatement was first reported by The Huffington Post.

White House spokesperson: 'Secretary McDonald has apologized for the misstatement and noted that he never intended to misrepresent his military service. We take him at his word and expect that this will not impact the important work he's doing to promote the health and well-being of our nation's veterans'
