Now I will admit that he wasn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier, to be carrying so much as a pop gun in New Jersey. They kinda follow the Constitution as it suits their mood in that state, and are actually quite proud of it.
This is absurd, even by their lofty standards though. It truly sets new lows and levels of pure stupid.
Oh... A real hero, that Sheriff. I mean, catching a desperado like this. Who knows how many bodies are on this gun! (gasp!) They are right on top of finding out tho!

As the story points out....this is a 300 year old firearm. It not only takes partial dis-assembly to load and fire (I wonder if they damage it in the attempt?) but it almost predates the invention of rifled barrels entirely. It is a smooth bore barrel though, which means...the lands and grooves which make rifling or ballistics useful? Don't exist.
I wonder if they fire shotguns for ballistics reports too? lol.... Still, the grief this poor man faces is no laughing matter.
The guy is a retired school teacher in his 70s, looking at a sentence that would carry over 5 years before parole would even be possible?? This is the same nation, lets recall, where I don't even need a permit to casually toss a loaded firearm in my glove compartment. Its the one instance where folks in Missouri can carry more or less concealed w/o a permit. Are New Jersey residents less mature or capable of safe handling than we are here?
Things have gone insane when its not even that fuzzy. This is a museum piece being charged the same as a .44 magnum. Dumb is happening all over!

A Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled over Gordon for a traffic violation, but wanted to search his car. Upon discovering a flintlock pistol in the glove compartment, VanGilder said that another deputy wanted to let him go since he knew the firearm was an antique. The Sheriff disagreed. VanGilder was arrested the following morning, and faces up to ten years in prison; three and a half to five years of that sentence must be served before parole can be considered.

To make things more absurd, the prosecutor in the case told VanGilder’s lawyer–Evan Nappen–who’s in the video; that ballistics test will be run on the firearm.
