Some days she wondered if it was even worth getting out of bed. Rudely awakened by the alarm at 4:30 am, wander in a zombie-like state to the bathroom, turn on the coffee pot, open the laptop to check e-mails and messages. Suck down a few mugs of hot Colmbian coffee with sugar, clean, disinfect and deodorize the dreaded “morning mouth”, put on the work uniform and give the man a kiss goodbye. Battle the shivering from the cold to lock the door and head for the car then a short drive to work.
A nine hour work day slowly destroying her body- in and out of the freezer and coolers, more in than out. The cold taking it’s toll on her skin and aging joints, both dry and cracking. Constantly slinging around boxes weighing fifty pounds or more, body constantly aching. Never a slow day, always go, go, GO! Doing the job of two to three people, boss too cheap to hire help. Slowly being transformed into a mindless laboring robot for little pay, sliding further into debt as each payday passes rather than climbing up out of the money pit. Aging at a faster pace than what is considered normal.
The work day ends and she makes the drive home. Unlock the door, take off jacket and hang it on the dining room chair, throw purse on the loveseat and flop unceremoniously on the sofa. The apartment is a wreck, especially to someone with serious OCD issues but too tired to move. Return phone calls missed during the work day, check e-mail and Facebook messages, consider going to the bathroom and then to the fridge to get a drink but still too tired to move. Body is tired, brain is tired. Besides, if she goes to the bathroom she won’t be able to come out until it has been thoroughly scrubbed, if she goes in the kitchen the dishes will call to her incessantly as will the stove that wants dinner to be cooking NOW! Just too tired, don’t want to even look at any of it.
Not exactly how she pictured her life, not at this age anyway. Wasn’t life supposed to become easier as we age? Instead it had become harder, much harder. The work was harder, the money was less, the problems FAR beyond being more numerous, the complications a continuous, never ending stream. She couldn’t help but think “Was it really worth all of this? Really?”
She hears the sound of a key in the lock followed by the opening of the door. He walks in and says the usual “Hey baby! I missed you today!” He is also tired, so tired. His body is tired, his brain is tired. He is also slowly being transformed into a mindless laboring robot for little pay, sliding further into debt as each payday passes rather than climbing out of the money pit. Aging at a faster pace than what is considered normal. And yet when his eyes land on her they light up like those of a very young man and the smile that brightens his face takes a good twenty years away from his appearance. He wraps his arms around her body and she feels the pain and fatigue melt away, the worry leaves her mind and she feels a warmth in her heart and a smile that reaches her eyes spread across her face. At that moment she knows: It is worth getting out of bed. It is worth every ache and pain. It is worth having a tired body and a tired mind. It is worth anything and everything for this moment- for every moment- that we are together. It is worth any hardship, any price... this thing called true, everlasting love!
