This is an interesting one to follow. They (the administration) presented this to the public as if there had been long term talks and agreements being built for a long period.
The Cubans have almost seemed kinda baffled, in their reaction....
Our side is implying something big has changed, and it has changed for our simply giving up on having any position of leverage, while apparently giving plenty to Cuba.

Keep in mind the scene and setting here too.... Our side would make it sound great and a historic moment of change .... The other side?
Well, the message doesn't seem mixed or unclear, actually. I kinda wish it were a bit more so, because it isn't a good one.

I'd swear, if I didn't know better? Obama just told his people to stop caring about the previous positions and policies, like he told his Border Partrol to simply stop observing the fact we HAVE immigration law at all, and figured if he willed it? Cuba would naturally just cooperate and be all sorts of grateful.
After all, everyone is perfectly reasonable and wants to make nice nice and sing Kumbaya if we just give 'em half a chance to...he'd seem to think. While Cuba, several times I;ve watched in statements now, has very firmly stated that nothing about their system of government or social control within the population would change.

"One can't think that in order to improve and normalize relations with the U.S., Cuba has to give up the principles it believes in," Cuba's top diplomat for U.S. affairs, Josefina Vidal, told The Associated Press after the end of the talks. "Changes in Cuba aren't negotiable."

HAVANA TIMES — Eyebrows went up everywhere on Tuesday (Jan. 20) when a Russian intelligence ship docked in Havana on the eve of the diplomatic talks between Cuba and the United States. Its arrival had not been previously announced by either the Cuban or the Russian government.

The Viktor Leonov is a Vishnya-class electronic surveillance ship that has been gathering intelligence along the eastern coast of the United States for a while. It monitors military and some civilian communications and regularly patrols the North Atlantic and the Caribbean.
