Some idiot prank called a bomb threat in to the police department. The events which followed led to a bad search with good intentions and a homeowner nearly killing the police chief in a mistaken identity situation which carries a surprising outcome. It is surprising, at least, in so far as saying they usually aren't looked at this way.
We seen that part too many times in other stories, no doubt.
The facts are pretty basic from this homeowner's perspective. The cops were apparently trying to be sneaky...which made them look exactly like burglars, I'll bet.

The story also notes that the entry was made without a warrant, and more importantly, a common sense statement from a local resident. Simply put, in the countryside? When someone enters your home without being invited, you shoot them. Pretty standard thing folks are taught from childhood. Nothing good comes from lurking shapes sneaking around a residence in the dead of night.
I'm glad the Chief wasn't killed, and certainly hope this is an important lesson taken far beyond just this situation. Yelling "Police" a couple times is a GREAT way to avoid being shot by a perfectly legal and proper homeowner, acting in pure fear and self defense.
Sentinel Police Chief Louis Ross was shot Thursday morning after he entered a house looking for the person who allegedly phoned in a bomb threat to a Head Start center, CNN affiliate KFOR reported.

"The man who shot and wounded the Sentinel police chief will not be arrested at this time," the release said. "OSBI investigators have extensively interviewed the man. Facts surrounding the case lead agents to believe the man was unaware it was officers who made entry."

"They made entry, cleared the first bedroom, started to clear the second bedroom, he opened fire on police and shot our chief three times in the chest and once in the arm," Dlugonski told KFOR
