Disclaimer: Let me first start off by saying that I am an ardent supporter of the 2nd Amendment. I really want no changes to it at all. I’m just being a devil’s advocate. I will not be addressing the issue of the mass shootings either of recent history in this thread. Just the core issue.
I have been thinking about this for a long time. Why does anyone really need an AR-15 or AK-47 variant or some other semi-automatic rifle that is capable of carrying a 20-30+ round magazine?
The calibers vary across the board, from 5.56mm/.223 cal, which by the way, there is an actual difference between those two rounds even though an AR-15 will fire both. Same with the 7.62 NATO and .308 Win, all the way to a .50cal BMG round. All are deadly.
So I guess my first question is, “Why does someone need more than 10 rounds?” Hell, when hunting in most States, the law limits you to 3-5 rounds. Which leads to my next question…”Are you really that piss poor of a shooter that you need a full magazine of 20-30 rounds”? I would hate to clean any game you shot.
My take in this article is that semi-automatic weapons be not be banned but just be priced out of range and only allow Bolt-Action, Lever Action, Pump Action and Single shot rifles be available to the average citizen.
I can already hear the crowds gathering to tar and feather me. But please allow me to clarify myself. The above weapons I listed require self control and discipline to fire accurately. Yes, with a Lever Action or a Pump, you can blaze away, but chances are that you will miss more than you hit. By the way, that also goes for a semi-auto.
A serious shooter only requires one bullet. Not thirty. The average citizen is not a Soldier, even though many veterans do live among them and those Vets will tell you that carrying a combat load of 210 rounds of 5.56mm can get tiring after a while. Why does the average citizen really need that many rounds? Semi-automatic rifles also experience a high malfunction rate compared to the others. There are many moving parts, gases being expelled every time the trigger is pulled. That’s a lot of wear and tear when you have something that is high capacity. And it does get pricey.
If a revolution, invasion or even martial law ever erupted, those weapons I listed above will allow you to be similarly armed as those who you oppose, if you live that long. But it wouldn’t take a long time to acquire such weaponry. And you may very well find out that “One shot, One kill” from a distance is advantageous, rather than spraying and praying at shorter distances.
I think that the U.S. is caught up in fear mongering and while at being afraid are going in the wrong direction entirely by buying up all sorts of Tacti-Cool gear and weapons. This feeds those who want to ban weapons in its entirety.
As for the law, if a high capacity weapon is used in a crime and no life is taken, the punishment should be severe. Life imprisonment with no hope for parole. If a life is taken, then the perpetrator should be executed as soon as possible, only allowed two, maybe three, appeals and upon the last appeal, taken out the back door and disposed of. I bet that thugs and criminals would start thinking twice. But I digress and that is another subject for another day.
All the rifles I listed are more accurate, require less maintenance and are relatively cheaper than a semi-automatic rifle. Most are also of higher quality. All it takes is practice to be proficient. I cannot in all honesty make the same argument for pistols because the barrels are shorter and hence, so are the ranges at which they are effective, though a semi auto pistol does have a shorter life than a wheel gun just due to all the moving parts every time you squeeze the trigger.
So convince me dear reader of why exactly do you need a 20-30 round mag for your weapon of choice. Are you really that poor of a shot or are you really just that scared. Because a overweight guy or a skimpily clad girl photographed with an AR or AK just doesn't look cool to this kid, even though they may think it makes them cool.
