Sounds like hubby's mother had more of a RELIGION than a RELATIONSHIP with God.
Some junk is from poor teaching . . . . Some from fleshy, human, gritchy, dysfunctional, attachment disordered crud and sinfulness. Pentecostal churches tend to stink horribly . . . or be very loving and powerful and full of miracles.
A lot of Pentecostal parents as well as RCC nuns et al have done more damage to individuals' spiritual walks than a lot of demons have directly. Some have been well meaning in intent and some have just acted spitefully out of their own mangled and polluted hearts.
I understand your perspective.
From my perspective, you've been sold a wholesale distorted bill of goods . . . as, evidently has hubby.
I do think asking God to make Himself real in terms one can wrap their understanding meaningfully around is a good request. Of course, He's God. He does NOT play by OUR rules and sensibilities and certainly very rarely by our timing.

I don't know if I'm excessively influenced by my training, but I think we have three interrelated parts. Our spirits (or souls, or whatever is eternal within us), our bodies, and our minds. We have those, I believe, in order to gain knowledge and understanding of eternal truths (which may include God's existence and nature).
Just by thinking about the origins of everything that exists, I've come to believe that the first sub-atomic particle, or first little squeak of energy had to have been created by a supernatural, thinking, something. (I call it God in order to be more easily understood.) No science or philosophy has ever come up with any other reasonable explanation, let alone an experiment to test it.
It's possible to overthink the question and close yourself off to physical and supernatural experiences. It's also possible to get so emotional that it's possible to have a belief which makes absolutely no sense, but "feels" right. I get suspicious of anyone who completely surrenders to any of the three elements, ignoring the other two.
