let me say i am asking cause i am honestly curious/interested.
i dont plan to accept any type of faith. just fascinated by the story and am brushing up on my history as i am leading towards the vatican city trip.
there are some things i really dont get though.
so, lets start.
most biblical/religious scholars believe that jesus was a jewish rabbi..he preached his message orally and he was baptized by john.
christians believe he is/was the messiah.
how is it that a rabbi(jewish) led the christianity movement? preached in churches(not temples).
how come jews dont believe he was/is the messiah?
judaism rejects him as being the messiah yet jesus was jewish.
im not understanding this.
--------------
whats the deal with mary magdalene and the whole prostitution thing?
was that a smear campaign that came later? from what i have been reading the writings seem to blend magdalene with mary of bethany into one composite, making magdelene out to be a prostitute.
why do this?
from what i gather the gospels that we know, not the ones left out of the new testament(i will get to that) make more mention of mary than the other apostles. kind of like she was higher up the food chain for lack of a better term than the other apostles. some sects(not the right term) view magdalene as a saint. how is that possible when others think she was a whore?
whats with all the gospels that were left out of the new testament? why were they left out?
the gospel of mary. the gospel of thomas. the gospel of phillip?
all examples...
whats the reason for not including them? why do followers dismiss them?
do they not fir the narrative 'they'(the church) is/was trying to paint about jesus.
i would like to hear from believers and non believers alike? if youre a believer and youre tought the bible, do you not question all the things left out?
what about jesus's brothers and sisters?
im not sure if they are mentioned in the new testament but theyre mentioned in the gospels that were left out.
is this more about the fitting narrative thing?
the virgin mary is taught to be known as the perpetual virgin. this is not possible if she had other kids.
so, even though there are gospels that mention jesus's brothers and sisters, it is often explained as
they were not his blood siblings. they were actually his cousins that were so close to the family they were considered his siblings
or
they were josephs kids from a previous marriage
----------------
if someone, hopefully more than one person can chime in on any of this it would be much appreciated.
no bashing from me. im sure the answers will beg more questions but i am confused.
as i said, i dont believe but i am fascinated.
thanks
