Teye22, In this case, yes. Is it malware? I'm so sorry this happened to you!
That happened to us once, but we were lucky enough to recover our pictures with the help of a computer program. Now we have a zillion memory sticks.....
I have no idea if this was caused by malware Nugget,
I have a 2.5 adaptpr to hook up the hdd to another pc (like you would an external hdd) and it didnt get detected as a valid disk!
It has been acting up for the last little while, the positive point I take from this is that even of I lose everything on there, my paptop will aurely work a lot better than ot did!
If I can resotre the pc that is!
Heading home now so I will f...ing around with ot later tonight!
No luck with my damn laptop...I am affraid its data is gone!!
The only consolation I have is that I can get the laptop to work again if I re-install Windows from sctarch but this wont give me back all these years of family pictures!
And lets not forget my book in progress! I found an older version of it in my email when I sent it to my work a few months ago, but its missing the last 10 pages or so that I had produced this Summer!
From now on, its gon' be memory sticks all the way!
I'm learnding!

Teye, everything is still on your hard drive. When that happened to us, my husband was planning on sending the drive to a company that charges $600.00+ to recover the data-with no guarantees. He found a program online that was free, and it worked!
Label your drive and set it on a shelf. You never know when the right program will find you!
Teye, I am so sorry to hear about your computer with your book and all of the pictures. You would be fully justified to have a good cry over losing all of that. I hope that there is something that you can do do save/restore them. We had something similar happen to an old computer and were able to take it to a computer specialist and he was able to save almost all of my family pictures. I had almost all of Quin's baby pictures on there and, like Nugget, now have about a million memory sticks, but was able to save the pictures. My fingers are crossed for you.
Teye22, that's awful. I've been there with several HDDs, I saved them for future fixing. At some point in the future, I'll either try my hand at it with recovery software, or I'll take them in to a recovery specialist so I can pull all the old photos off them & have them back. For now, I suppose it's kind of like a vault with no key, lol.
I'm assuming it's a standard laptop drive & not an SSD, right? Can you hook it up as a slave drive (secondary) to a desktop and see if it works that way? If you haven't looked into it, you might have a bricked BIOS (corrupted/fried/etc) for some reason. If it's capable of auto-updating itself, or got a bad Windows update (which HAS happened, Windows broke thousands not too long ago) then it gets really tricky & hard to resolve a bricking. Not impossible, just better left to pro's due to difficulty in reversing. If that's the problem, then the drive itself may be ok to still boot as a slave drive on another computer.
For what it's worth, Tom's Hardware is a very helpful forum I've posted on a few times for messed up computer issues that I did eventually fix with their advice. Someone there may be able to narrow down specifically what went wrong where, and point you towards useful articles & software.

That's great news, Teye22! Hopefully it's super-easy to fix for you.
Oh!! I can't believe I forgot to mention this, because I had it happen to me and it mimics BIOS problems -- faulty RAM! If you can try swapping one of your RAM cards (assuming you have multiples installed) and booting one card installed at a time, that should tell you at some point if one might be responsible. I had a faulty card that kept my laptop from fully booting up and had to try that trick. I narrowed it down to the faulty one, bought a replacement, done. Otherwise, if you have just one installed, go grab one whereever around you sells RAM. And make sure they would allow for returns if this doesn't work.

My new whine is that while I was in the hospital, my dryer died. It won't heat up now and we are having to take our wet clothes to the laundromat to dry them. I am getting REALLY overwhelmed with life right about now.
i have found with appliances that its odten much cheaper to have them fixed than buying a new one! When ou washer died on us a few years ago, we were gonna buy a new one at 500$ and we decided to get it checked first...it only cost us 80$ and it still working like new today!
Just sayin'

Good idea, Teye. I will have to call around and see how much it will cost to have someone look at it and find out if it is something that they can repair for a reasonable price.
My whine is sort of recovery related, but not completely. I think it is more about my state of mind, really. Just that some days have been less excruciating pain than others. It's the days that are more pain that I have trouble with. Not even in dealing with the pain, but keeping a good mindset. Tonight I was hurting really badly and I was bending over backwards to not be cranky and snappy with the family, but the kid was having a teenager attitude and I was frustrated and trying not to take my discomfort out on them because neither had done anything to deserve my crappy attitude. It was hard and I did avoid behaving ugly, but I just had a hard time maintaining a positive mindset tonight and that in itself frustrated me even more.
So, I am hating recovery and that it makes me cranky and worried about taking it out on the family.
