MARY - Part Three
Mary felt so small and fragile in her mother’s arms, she was squeezing so hard it almost hurt!
“Hey Mum! You’re hurting me!” she cried.
But her mum wasn’t for letting her go, not now, not after all they’d been through...
“You are the cutest little thing! Yes you are!” She said, in a strange “baby” voice, wiggling her head from side to side like you would if you were talking to a new-born.
“Are you hungry? Do you want some Dinner? Yes you do! Yes You Do!”
“What is going on with mum???” Mary thought to herself, “Maybe this has shaken her up more than I thought?”
“Are you....OK Mum? You’re acting a little bit.... weird!” Mary asked.
“Will I get you some nice food? And a dish of water? You must be hungry, you’ve been out of it for hours!” mum responded, almost robotically, and with that she went to the far side of the room and opened a packet of “something or other”, pouring some into a little dish and setting it down beside Mary’s head.
Mary looked down at the little dish and frowned as she saw it was full of..... Nuts!
“Mum! You know I’m allergic!” she protested, and she automatically raised her hand to scratch the itch that was growing behind her ear, then watched slightly bemused, as a single piece of straw fell down in front of her.
Mary felt a great sense of unease, something definitely wasn’t quite “right” here... and finally she blurted out;
“What is going on??? Where did THAT come from??? Didn’t they clean me up when they brought me in here??? And why are you acting so weird Mum???”
But her mum just smiled at her, and repeated her baby-voice mantra; “You are sooooo cute! Yes you are!!”
At that point the door swung open, and a man in turquoise hospital scrubs came into the room carrying a clipboard.
Mary noticed his ID tag, it said that he was “Dr. J.Martin MRCVS DDVA of HAH”?
“Ahhh, Mrs Munro – I’m glad I caught you, this is the strangest case I’ve ever had to work on!” He said, “Little Mary’s been through the mill alright, we’re still trying to work out exactly what happened to her. It’s clearly....”her” but how this came to be is anyone’s guess at this stage. Did she have any contact with Squirrels before the accident?”
“WHAAAAT??” Mary was by this time, completely baffled by what was happening around her... “Squirrels?? What on earth do Squirrels have to do with anything?”
“We were speculating” the doctor added, “that during the defibrillation process... if a grey squirrel had been in close proximity... that....well... “something” could have got.... you know... mixed up when she......erm....”
“I’m not sure” replied mum, “there are squirrels in the trees, down by her friend Susan’s place.... but... I...”
Mary’s mind raced back to when she was hiding in the bushes, and how a strange grey “kitten” had hissed at her.
“Was that really a Kitten? What do Grey Squirrels look like anyway? And what has all this got to do with me??”
She bowed her head and went to cry, but suddenly realised that she had somehow picked up a nut from the dish and was gnawing on it ravenously! It was DELICIOUS!!! It was AMAZING!!!! She had NEVER tasted anything so good in her entire life!!!! And.... best of all... no reaction! No Allergy!
“WoooHoooo!!!” she thought, “This crazy accident might not have been so bad after all!!”
“Aww look!” Said her mum lovingly; “I knew you were hungry!”
And with that, her mum and the Doctor left the room, leaving Mary nibbling and chewing away on the surprisingly filling little dish of nuts.
It took another few minutes before the dish lay empty, and Mary slumped back on the bed and began to properly survey her surroundings. It looked more like a kitchen than how she imagined a hospital to be. There were worktops and strange plastic dishes stacked to one side, some white boxes with barcodes and numbers and a big metal sink with.... a Mirror!
“Maybe if I could get down off the bed and across to the sink?” she thought to herself... “I’d be able to get to that mirror and see just how bad I look after the accident”, so she rolled over and peered down off the bed and was shocked to find that the bed was really REALLY HIGH off the ground. Undeterred, she grabbed hold of the fabric that was covering her bed and lowered herself over the edge.
“That’s strange as well!” she said out loud; “this bed has sack-cloth over it stuffed with.... straw??”
She began to think that she might be just a little bit crazy... or maybe they had given her some mad drugs or something like the crazy guy her dad had seen in the park that day... but she felt that she just had to make it to that mirror... only then would she be able to see for herself how bad things were, so she carried on down the sack-cloth bedding and finally made it to the cold tiled floor. Quickly she scurried over the tiles and found herself looking up at the big unit which held the sink.
“Why is that soooo big?? Is this a hospital for giants or something??” she puzzled; “I MUST get up there, I just HAVE to find out what’s going on!”
So she worked her way along the base of the big unit until she came to the curtain which hung next to the door and started to climb.
She was pleasantly surprised at how easy the climb seemed to be, she had never really been any good at climbing before, and in no time at all she had reached the worktop by the big sink...
She took a step to her left, then another, and finally a third as she approached the front of the mirror, her heart pounding furiously, and she gulped nervously as her gaze reached up towards the shiny glass surface...
It had a sticker on the top corner which read “Holloway Animal Hospital”
“Animal Hospital? This doesn’t make ANY SENSE!!!!! WHAT’S GOING ON??” she screamed, as her gaze fell down the length of the mirror, until, at last, there at the bottom, she finally found her own reflection in the glass....
