March 1st, 1862
Richmond Virginia
We rode up to the Building General Buell was being held in. The Guards were tense and sent for their officer. He read the orders and acknowledged them.
"What does Jackson's Department of Health and Safety want with the General, Major West.?"
I answered for the Major, "Sorry Captain that is above your rank. As you see the orders were approved by General Lee himself. Bring us the General and assign the guard to escort him."
The Captain glared at me but as newly minted captain myself, in my all black Uniform I was not taking anything from this man. Major Adam West stood and stared right back. He was the only officer I met in camp that I respected. He had been abandoned by Forrest and Beauregard at Donelson. He had been knocked out and was the only officer in camp that had not surrendered.
"Is there a problem Captain?"
"No sir!" The Captain sent the guards to bring out General Buell.
When he reached us the Major informed him, "Per my orders, Directly from General Lee, Commanding Officer of The Confederate Army and Navy, has ordered you to report to our Prison camp and assume command of the unruly prisoners. You are to maintain order and discipline under the watch of the Confederate Army Department of Health and Safety."
To my surprise the General was shocked and had his head at an angle staring at the major. He laughed and shook his head.
West took a breath and Continued, "You will also follow any orders given by the commanding officer in charge of the camp. You have two weeks to have all the necessary health and safety requirements implemented. As the highest ranking Officer of the camp you will maintain discipline and mete out punishment to your own men. Any failure will result in you being disciplined for any infractions of your men."
The General Stood At attention and said sarcastically,"Is their anything else Major."
The major gut checked him and caused him to go to his knees. The Captain nodded his head as the major bent down to the general, "These orders come from THE commanding officer, you WILL follow them."
General Buell Laughed again. As he stood up he stared at the Major still smirking. "Tell your COMMANDING OFFICER, I understand my orders and acknowledged receiving them."
Another Horse was brought up for the general and his guards. As he climbed up with help because his hands had been bound, he addressed the officer in charge of the guard. "Captain, you asked me last night what I personally thought of the Butcher of Belmont. I said I refrained from talking about people who were not here to defend themselves. I take that back, he is a bastard. Complete and utter."
The Captain nodded as if he understood as we rode off.
