I honestly don't think this is for everyone,be that woman or man. It requires a great amount of training, strength, not just physical but mental, etc.
Sometimes I can't even open a jar of pickles. I know I would not be fit for this, but there are some women who really want to do this and have the stamina and even the strength, and if this is their goal in life, I say let them.
Here's an example:
History in the making: 2 women will graduate from Army Ranger course Link
Two women are about to make history by becoming the first female soldiers to graduate from the Army's exhausting Ranger School.
They're among the 96 students who will graduate from the intensive training program Friday in Fort Benning, Georgia.
I have no problem with this as long as they can pass the same course, training that a man has to pass.
Women have no place in combat ...... only thing they will end up doing is getting alot more men killed ...... or if they get captured theyll end up being the entertainment for enemy troops ...... seen firsthand what happens to women prisoners in war ....... it not suitable to go into detail here on what happens to them .....
Am very much old school when it comes to military ..... war and women in combat ..... personally wouldnt accept any woman in a unit I command ...... not get paid enough to babysit and put up with their bullshit would end up shooting them myself to save the lives of my troops .....
Todays military bunch of pussys and fat boys with lax standards and mollycoddled .......

I agree with Rain, there was a woman on my infantry training years ago and she was in amazing shape, our platoon commander(officer) was also a woman and none of us could outrun her and I could run 10km under 45 minutes! not anymore though
Well this recruit graduated with flying colors while some of the men actually dropped out!
As Rain said, its not for everyone, but if you can keep in shape and keep up with the group, I say go for it!
You don't have a soul. You are a soul, you have a body!
I'm not sure I'd use quite as colorful of terms as the OP for this, but I have to say I generally agree. When this was theory, the idea was the standards would never be changed, and women who could hack it...would get their bit to hack. We have seen that was absolutely NOT true in how the Services HAVE adapted to make it more realistic for women to pass in physical respects. We've seen actual headlines to suggested investigations where female %'s in combat arms didn't measure up for graduation rate.....as the ORIGINAL STANDARD CONCEPT would have made a given to see happen.
I love how we all want to be equal these days and play like we are. I am almost amused at how hard we seem to pretend we are 100% totally equal. Well... We aren't. We never have been, and we never will be.
Women are physically weaker, by nature than men. This isn't insulting to say, it is a biological fact differentiating the sides of a species, as much as it is evident in nature and the animal world. Females and Males have distinct size differences, personality or dispositions, and very different roles in nature, and almost without exception across species to look at.
Was something about being human supposed to re-write biology JUST for our species or something?

If women CAN pass 100% EQUAL courses and 100% EQUAL tests to men, then by God, suit them up, give them a weapon and a squad position and send them out to fight and die with everyone else. They've fought for the right to die in a foreign land for political causes...who are we to say they can't?
If they cannot pass 100% equal to and with ABSOLUTELY NO special accomodation, whatsoever? Then the very fact itself says equality is a wish, not a reality, and we're weakening our national defense by including people in our fighting Services who cannot fight equal to the man or person next to them.

I think Dait is also correct in POW issues. We are going to see a female POW at some point, and not Lynch with the Iraqis, like happened in 2003. That was a kind and gentle captivity period with Iraqis as scared of American reprisal for mistreatment at that stage, as anything else.
If ISIS gets a female pilot, or ANY American female in military service...we won't get a quickie beheading, and she won't be given that mercy. They will likely video everything they do, and release it world wide ...and it'll likely take days for her to break, and then, mercifully, die.
We'll see how the nation feels about Females in combat after it sees the full package for what that REALLY means, and it ain't parades or VFW get togethers which matter. It's the part where lead stuff is hitting the red stuff, and ANY advantage is a MAJOR advantage. Our penchant for weakeness to Females IS our cultural weakness..and we're handing it to an enemy as a tool to use. God help the women tho...because the way they are used to BE an advantage will border on Evil, given who we fight right now.
At least a man in ISIS hands has death to look forward to, as likely being the worst he'll get. That...is what a female will come to wish for, above all else, I fear.
Wrabbit, you have essentially echoed my own fears about women in combat.
My dad used to say it would get the men killed because they would try to protect the women instead of themselves. I'm sure that is still true to an extent. ISIS would most assuredly pick up on that and use it to their advantage...along with the other issues you mentioned.
I, personally, feel that if you enjoy the (supposed) rights and (supposed) freedoms of being an American citizen then you should serve our country in some capacity for a set period of time. Combat isn't the only venue open to be of service.

You're either part of the solution or part of the problem. There is no middle ground.
And, yes - it will eventually graduate to 'quotas'.
When offered the opportunity to try out for the Seals...my hand was glued to my lap.
A couple' others raised their hands, and were carted away to salutes and cheers - "You can do it!", as well as jeers - "See you, soon." ...and, one was back in the company within a day, while the other shouldn't even have been allowed to try.
Why would a woman want to be part of such a group? I'm guessing - the proverbial chip on the shoulder...with some need to prove that she's as good as or better than a man. (And that is what/who this is pandering too.)
(There are other and better ways, imo......many, already in use, and honed to perfection.)
Must allow female journalists into the locker room.
How many female sports must allow male journalists into their locker rooms?
If I (male) can't make it because of the standards - Where does ANYONE come up with the notion that a woman/female (or Black, Hispanic, Gay, Handicapped, etc...) SHOULD be awarded 'the prize' under 'modified (lesser) standards'?
There is something so 'out of balance' with that balancing act.
If this is going to be the case... The only way that it can work, is to eliminate Boys & Girls bathrooms, and changing rooms and dorms...from the earliest year/s of their lives.
Otherwise, "The Boys" will not adjust to it...well.
That is not to say that "The Boys" are doing it "right", now, either.
This won't resolve itself until we go into the next REAL war, or we get a Commander and Chief who is interested in an effective fighting force ABOVE the 'new religion' of social justice. Social justice won't mean a damn thing if we're speaking another language by force, and saluting a flag we never chose to live under...will it?
When we lose the next major war..or we start to lose in the first rounds of it...they'll look back on a great many things, I'd guess. Survival has a way of doing that, I think.
When that has come to pass, I think we'll also see realism return to military priority. Until then? The more warm, fuzzy, rainbow colored and inclusive they can make it? The better...
.....and our enemies in the world are overjoyed to watch this. These changes are their greatest dreams come true to see happen.
I'm a sexist. I believe that there are differences between men and women. I rather enjoy the differences.
But I am not a chauvanist. I do not believe that one "sex" is better than another.
As for women in combat?
As much as I have served, I've always been a REMF. Sorry, no combat tales from this bunny. Women I have worked with in the military were equal to the tasks that I performed. Though the biggest danger was paper cuts and falling asleep at your desk.
I cannot say whether they'd be just as good or not. I've heard stories that they are as good. I've heard stories that they aren't as good.
My suggestion would be to end war so we'd never have to have this discussion.
My dad used to say it would get the men killed because they would try to protect the women instead of themselves. I'm sure that is still true to an extent.
YES!! That is exactly what my husband says
Men are taught in our country when they are small boys to protect the girls, it is ingrained in them from an early age
So in combat, a guy might do something he ordinarily would not do with just guys, trying to protect her, and that could get him killed, if not the whole team
Also, doubt many women could pass the Navy Seals test anyway.....most hard core guys flunk out, it is NOT an easy training session at all
Doubt they would cut her any slack either, because in war, there is no "slacking" on the job when your teammates lives are on the line All that would do is lead to a bunch of unnecessary deaths I'm afraid

I'm Late To the Party,,,, Mr.G. here,,, I was in the same frame of mind as Daitengu most of my young life, mainly because of Standards of life being raised in America and How Women were Thought of. The Real world changed that,,,, or should I say to be more accurate, being in other countries that have depended on the female Gender to be Strong. My Wife is one, remember folks, she was assigned to follow me and she was the only agent I never spotted as a tail, until I approached her thinking I'd seen the Beautiful Woman before and wanted to ask her out, I startled her when she looked up and I was not 25 feet away and approaching her, she shot me twice thinking I'd made her and she was in danger. OH,,, that's a story my wife as already posted,,, no sense in rehashing or retelling. All I'm Saying is, different cultures think of the female gender differently and treat them in such a way, most American Raised Adults would be Horrified. look at WWII, who were some of the best Russian Snipers? Women, in Vietnam the NVC had some of the best women snipers ever point in the field.
China has women combat teams, that are trained to kill with knives only up close and Very personal. This is an American and Basically Western Society Way Of thinking!

Now I'm confused! Women make some of the best soldiers for combat, as long as there from any country but America?
I agree with Mr G. , @guohua, Some cultures have stronger women.
I'm Canadian, and I must say that none of my Canadian girlfriends would be fit for battle. We do know how to have a good time though. bacon&beer
When I lived in Qingdao , China, both my housekeeper and my boss were Chinese ladies. And when they told me to do something, I did it, no questions asked, they gave off this harda** attitude, I never wanted to get them angry.
I taught English there btw, that was back in my single days.
