Your OP brings something to mind about the knowledge one must have, most lack in the modern western world, and the problem would only compound like no one's business in the event of a civil breakdown.

I wonder if it might be worth the effort for some of us to get together for a serious try at not only collecting the critical texts covering a wide variety of skill sets (Army FM's do a lot of it, and can be found with some effort but many other sources do too) but a standard way of carrying and accessing it in a disaster situation? Computers sound nifty until realizing the same thing which makes the info important will make it inaccessible to most people who 'have a computer with that on it'.
