"Resonate" is a new word for me. I knew, of course, that if a string is tuned to a certain frequency, playing that frequency will cause the string to vibrate or "Resonate." That's not what I'm talking about. The usage of "resonate" in this post came from a hospital therapy session, and like all other words and concepts coming from the mental health professionals, this one is vague enough to be nearly meaningless. So here's what I mean by it.
Take a quote found in a movie and consider it simply as words. If upon hearing the quote, any of the following apply, then the quote may be said to resonate.
The quote seems very funny when there's nothing funny about it, and very few other people can see any humor in it.
The quote, otherwise just another line in the script, seems to sum up your life or life in general, and trying to explain it to anyone else is a complete waste of time.
You have an idea, principle, or philosophy which usually takes 5 minutes to explain, and the quote does it in one line.
OK, one more necessary guideline. You have to have heard the line while watching the entire film, no looking at a list of quotes. You need to know the context, hear the tone of voice, understand how it fits in, before you can tell if it "resonates." Here are some of mine. Please add some of your own, or let me know if some resonate with you, thanks.
From the film Dylan Dog:
"You know what they say about hindsight, it'll screw you every time."
"Things in life don't get better, alright? Either they stay the same or they get a lot worse. Five, ten, twenty years from now, I want every day to be the same. That's my plan."
"Your heart can go on ticking but, sometimes, that's just for show."
From Demolition Man:
"Uh, smoking is not good for you and it has been deemed that anything not good for you is bad, hence illegal. Alcohol, caffeine, contact sports, meat, bad language, chocolate, gasoline, any uneducational toys, and anything spicy. Abortion is also illegal, but so is pregnancy if you don't have a license."
"What would you say if I called you a brutish fossil symbolic of the decayed era gratefully forgotten?"
"I don't know. Thanks?"
From the TV series The Equalizer:
"Always remember that nothing real has happened since 1957."
The 1975 Rollerball has this:
"Please, there are hospital rules that have to be . . ."
"No there aren't. . . . there aren't any rules at all."
And Big Trouble in Little China:
"This is just so shocking, I mean, I must be monumentally naive." (Miss Gracie Law)
The Watchmen offers the Comedian saying:
"It's a joke, it's all a joke." (Two or three seconds before he's thrown to his death.)
Remo Williams has several which resonate:
"Tell me, McCleary, can you dodge bullets?"
"Nowadays, only if they come real slow."
"Guard, protect, and cherish your land for there is no afterlife for a place that started out as heaven. - Charles M Russel, Montana, 1926"
"Professional assassination is the highest form of public service."
From Captain America - Winter Soldier comes:
"The world has changed. All we can do is our best, and sometimes the best is not enough."
I'd really like to see the responses to these.
