Hey Hernandos, I've been thinking about expatriation from the US for a few years now and for a few reasons.
1. My income as a disabled veteran doesn't cut it. 2.My country has lost it's frakking mind. 3. I hate people with a passion (see #2).
Not necessarily in that order. --------------------------------------
Now, as for locations I have a general idea of where to go. Maybe South or Central America (I hear Peru ,Chile , Honduras, and Dominican Republic are nice) but i'm open to other locations as well. Somewhere that the dollar could pay for a lot more things than in the US and somewhere that has a lot of rural areas where a guy with a hate for civilization could live in peace and only be bothered when it comes time for a resupply mission.
I know a few of you have eyes and ears for this sort of thing, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
As a creature of thought, my opinions are subject to change with the amount of knowledge and insight gained. The reason it's called the past is because it's already passed.
Getting harder to find places these days to do that ...... most now require 1. useable / needed skill / education ( university or college degree ) 2. Income - in some countries they do accept retired / disabled people on downside your usually limited to retiree communites ( often overpriced real estate they make foriegners buy ) 3. you might luck out and find a place with erm ..... how to say ...... more cooperative *cough* bribable *caugh* ..... officials .....
If you have a friend or can log on to a countries Expat web sight many questions can be answered.
Some countries require proof of a monthly income and money in the bank before they will consider your long term residence.
What languages do you speak or are you motivated to learn a new language ?
Are you single or married ?
What type of food can you eat; are you picky ?
Where there is a will there is usually a way and all it takes is perseverance and picking the right place to begin with. LOAS can be expensive considering the government is a bunch of commies, Cambodia is real third world but still has some nice places and things to do. Thailand, away from the major touristy spots can be very reasonable. Where ever you think you want to go save for a ticket and visit first for 30 or 60 days..
We left the states 4 years ago after selling everything. I plan on dying here and have no desire to return to:
Shucks I forgot how to post a picture !! Have one with Obama wearing a Golf hat that says Entitleist..
There areas here in the USA where money goes a lot farther. Maybe wages in the area are not as high, but the cost of living is lower. Another thing is that we have been conditioned to spend money on things we do not need. We have been led to believe some things are needed when they aren't. This is to make our economy thrive and create jobs for people. We do not have to participate in that game, we can opt out. You do not have to become a shut in either. There are plenty of low cost things to occupy your time. The Senior center here puts on all sorts of things, they cost something, but the money goes to hiring school kids to serve breakfasts and work at events. It still is only around five bucks for breakfast and six bucks for a homemade soup luncheon. They also put together lots of functions like Pinaccle and other card games and schedule trips that are reasonably priced.
We need something to do. Energy needs to be busy. If energy is not busy doing something it causes chaos. Both in the mind and body. That does not mean that a person needs to spend a lot of money to keep busy. Moving to another country is not necessary, you can move to another area where the money you do get goes farther. Here a can of Salmon goes for two and a half bucks on sale all over, other places they never go under five bucks. We have created a complex mess in this country.
That reminds me, I need to call a friend who is an indian commercial fisherman and buy some whitefish right off the boat. At a buck and a half a pound, it is a deal. I want to freeze at least ten for this winter. I buy the vaccum pack bag rolls when they are on sale, a bag runs about a half a buck but it still is a money saver and it keeps the fish fresher in the freezer. I was at my brothers yesterday to pick tart cherries to freeze for pie and make jam. It will be three days before they are ready. We learned that if we go out and pick stuff we can make our desires reasonably priced. Learn how to do this and your disability check will be plenty to live and you will make new friends at the same time.
I've looked into this a bit and I have to second 747's point. Expat is a concept I've been seriously considering as well, since I doubt this country CAN recover to a decent level in the good years I have left to me, if 2016 slides further into leftist anarchy. Time to exit the building if that happens...
Still, think America is bad? End up homeless elsewhere....and see what fun it can be when other Governments look at such a thing as 100% your problem and..what? You'll die without food? Well...just don't do it in the street and block traffic or anything...and I swear that likely is all the Sympathy an American is going to see in most of the world.
I swear, at this rate we ought to plan a get together for about 5 years. Its a safe bet a South East Asian location will be central to more members than not. lol
Nnnnnoooooooo....... yankees go home !!!!!!!!!! not need any more bolloxing things up over here ...... already got too many ate too much western shit bolloxing everything up now as is dont want or need any more .......
If I did not play golf (rather expensive when you do it everyday like I do)I could live on $2500 a month and still have a car and a couple of motorbikes and a good life. With $3000 a month and paying insurance on three cars two motorbikes, electricity (about $100 a month during the hot season), and food to include eating out a couple of times a week we live rather high on the hog. But.... Our farm house is paid for and there are no property taxes.
You can stay at a decent place (Hotel) for about $600 a month with a big pool and Jacuzzi and everything.... or go 5 star and spend $200 a night....
We tend to put at least $1500/$2000 in different bank accounts every month (savings and medical) Plus we took most of the money from selling our stuff in the states and have that amount in an interest bearing account that pays us every quarter.. WHICH I HAVE TO PAY TAXES ON IN THE STATES on top of the $750 I pay every month on the money I receive from my retirement account.... We are not rich however I am lucky in that I could afford to live in the states. I actually looked at a retirement community on a golf course in Florida where some of my friends were egging us on to move there...... but my question was why pay property/school taxes when I don't have to ? To be honest I just got tired/bored of the B.S. and decided it would be better for me to have some new B.S. to learn.
I really am big on freedom and for me I can live an do just about anything my heart desires. My pedicure and manicure ($6) once every two weeks plus a good massage anytime I want one for $9 is very civilized for my mind and spirit. I have some of the best toenails you will ever see for an old guy !!!
This is my wife's country and she has stayed long enough in the states that she can recognize B.S. no matter where she is which I find funny when she cuts loose on some things we come across. She gets mad at people who say 9 o'clock and show up at nine thirty or ten... She calls it Thai time which she hates; my kinda girl....
IMO there is gonna be B.S. no matter where you go but most countries I would consider living in have not elevated it to such a fine art as some of our western civilized countries. Just call me a primitive at heart for as long as I am not to cold or to frigging hot and have my health and all the amenities I enjoy (which are many IMO)I can live just about anyplace but... Here for us beats any other place for us at this time.

I think I'll leave that typo..and just start running before I ask if that is the Wide Body version ... heh
Sorry 727.. ::)
I never have been into wide body anything ! However the money is good but the trips really do suck if we are speaking airline stuff... Otherwise I like my aircraft just like I like my women. All the right curves with the feeling of power in my manly hands as they preform my every wish and command...hahahha Just call me Captain Sky727.... Well a guy can dream every now and then can't we !

Oh sometimes people have to look into what other countries are like before they find a truer appreciation of their own.. Most wont even make it out the door, if they were smart! :)
America is sucking for many lately, but at the same time, it is at least our kind of suckiness... other people can keep their way way way more sucky all to themselves! :P
