I've been always amazed at how potatoes and onions continue their life cycle if forgotten about. They're like the go-to veggies in the "Gardening for Idiots" book.
I'm sure we've all had a potato patch growing in the cupboard at some point in our lives. The buggers sure start sprouting pretty fast after you buy them. It must be a GMO thing.
Beware the man who has one gun, he probably knows how to use it.
Doug, lol, with as self-starting as onions & potatoes are, they do seem like veggies for the Garden Inept L_L
And hooray! After several days of the moist paper towel method of pre-germinating, I have a couple of beet seeds finally sporting tiny tap roots! I do know transplanting them as seedlings isn't a good idea, but I'll try it anyway. If it doesn't work out,I have plenty more seeds left in the pack cu5222a777

I transferred a dozen little taproot-sporting beet seeds to containers late last night, still waiting to see if any of the other 2 dozen sprout anything. A few have even graduated to purple taproots quickly. And come to find out beets are interesting little seeds -- those husks of theirs can contain 4 or more individual seeds that require culling all but one. I may leave one or two clusters as-is when they're transplanted to the ground just to see what happens. I'm curious like that.

Now I know you're evil or an alien. Beets!? xr522298d3
I bet you like Brussel Sprouts as well. thumbsdown Just kidding and I know they are good for you, but I can't stomach either. I just may turn to cannibalism before I eat either of them.

Brussels sprouts are disgusting xr522298d3 I like borscht, though. A lot. I could live on it (must be those Russki genes of mine) If all goes well,I should have enough beets for plenty of borscht into next winter!

Nyiah, No matter what you're growing or how you've planted it, don't forget the worms. Yes, Worm's, go to a Bait and Tackle store or Walmart and buy a container of fishing worms, Night-Crawlers are best but Red Worms will do just fine, add them to your soil and let them do their do of adding nutrients and they also help keep your soil soft for the roots. Any Night Crawlers left over from our fishing trips go in my gardens.

We are planting quite a bit on our balconies this season. So far the list is broccoli, collards, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes (my seedlings are HUGE already), bell peppers, peas, green beans, jalapenos, potatoes, strawberries, onions, garlic various herbs, and maybe a few more. I'm also going to try to grow some corn. Don't know how the corn is going to do in a container but part of the fun is to try. :) I would love to grow some melons if I can. We'll see once everything is mapped out.
I think bonhommearmonica is planning some type of small aquaponics set up as a test. That should be an interesting adventure. Hopefully we can keep the fish alive.
Good luck on your gardens, every one!

@guohua, we seem to have a lot of earthworms on the property (could explain why we got tons of birds even before putting up the bird feeder) You can't try to shovel anywhere without disturbing one, lol. Adding worms to the garden wouldn't be detrimental to the earthworms already here, would it?
