As she stepped cautiously through the dust and rubble of what once had been a great and shining oasis she felt pangs of sadness. What had started as an idea became a beacon for those seeking freedom of communication and exchange of knowledge, unhindered by Nazi-like mods and a social caste system of stars and flags. For a while it was good.
Others came, as they often do, and with them they brought demands- demands that would change the oasis into that which they had all left behind. It is ironic that this happens often in history, it is no surprise that this behavior extends to the land of the internet. While no outside forces could bring down the shining beacon just like the Roman Empire it was brought low by in-fighting, ego and greed. The people of the land warred with each other, brother against brother, until there was nobody left to make war with and all eventually deserted the once bright city.
All that is left now is rubble from the crumbled walls and dust, the once great halls echo with quiet laughter of days gone by, and memories of friendships made and then destroyed by ego and pride. Every so often she carefully strolls through the ruins, re-imagining the glory that was.... and hoping that one day the kingdom will be restored.
Maybe, just maybe.
God created war so that Americans would learn geography. - Mark Twain
