AvHerald.com is reporting that data transmissions from EgyptAir Flight 804 to ground stations show smoke was detected in a bathroom near the cockpit. NBC News has confirmed the messages are authentic.

I wonder why it took so long for this information to come out? :dunno:

Messages also seem to indicate there may have been a problem with the controls and computers, critical to controlling the plane.

It seems to me that relying on computers for critical things- without some kind of manual override-isn't the wisest thing to do. I've never been comfortable knowing nuclear power plants, hospitals(and surgical equipment), water treatment plants, and basically everything vital to survival is now completely computer controlled.

Terrorism has been cited as a potential cause of the crash. Investigators are looking at anyone with access to the EgyptAir plane while it was sitting on the ground, including baggage handlers, caterers, cleaners and fuel truck workers.

What's the next step-surveillance cameras in every area on planes and in airports? Body cams for all airline workers? :dunno:

I sure do miss the good old days when life was a lot less complex.

The planes they fly now a days constantly report to satellites reams of info for every little detail going on with the plane, I would think it took a little while to decipher it to the point the had smoke in the potty, let alone the attitude of the plane going out of whack. Then they begin to prioritize it to the most dangerous to the least.

I really think the way to fix all of this and I hope who ever is elected POTUS thinks about it, but how necessary would the TSA be if we just got out of the way and told the military to kill every group of terrorist, every single terrorist and when a knew one crops up we kill them to. Viola' no threat, even they can't be stupid enough not to realize at some point if you mess with the US we hunt you down and kill you. Interestingly the Israeli's don;t seem to have to much of this problem like the rest of the world... Just Say'in.... They might could teach us something.

The ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting) messages suggest the possibility of smoke or a fire in close proximity to the electronics and equipment bay of the Airbus A320, located below the floor of the cockpit.

Are they saying the electronic eguipment responsible for controlling the plane is not isolated and protected in a fireproof area? :shocked:

Shouldn't all such critical areas be in a fail-safe container of some sort?

"We can confirm that these data messages are genuine, they are real," Barthe said. "There are five or six reports of smoke from the front of the aircraft, close to the cockpit. We are not putting any interpretation on this information or what is the cause of the smoke."

It seems strange that no smoke/fire was detected in time to send a mayday call, unless it WAS an explosion.
