The dog is the real hero in this case. Everyone else did something real stupid to help make this happen, it sounds...not least of all, the police.
Wow.. Really? So if they have no certain addy..they just kinda stick their proverbial thumb up to feel the wind direction and follow to a door? What gives?? Its bad enough that squads better placed in battle than a civilian neighborhood are kicking doors for crime without direct violence, and far short of chasing a predator or overtly violent threat to civil order.
I really CAN understand no-knock warrants and dynamic entries. I remember when they really began, and WHY they began. It really did seem a good idea at the time, and times like the 1980s make violence today look common but not rampant.
A combat tactic became the preferred method though, across the nation it seems...and this results.
#1. Officer Goober or Lieutenant Pea brain started the train wreck in motion by figuring a house clearing of '...Doh! DAT one!.. was a good idea, when it is clearly reported no certain address existed.
#2. The homeowner can't be faulted for being shot in his very own home, doing what people tend to do at home. Living...sleeping..and reacting oddly when unknown bodies are occupying a very private space. Opening the door to an unknown situation started the OK corral though, with only one side having guns. SUCH a turkey shooting SNAFU, the cops even tagged one of their own for a solid hip shot.
#3. Do they grow them dumb for the cop shop in Georgia, or do they have to be trained down to that level of ...REALLY?! It sounds like all the control and discipline of a boy scout troop handed machine guns and told to go fight the front line.

(sigh) ... How many kids actually died from a flying lawn dart, before they took national action to see the things banned into oblivion like they carried a little warhead on them or something?? How many other things take just a few examples to grab attention before radical changes come to procedures or product designs?
...how many wrong house shoots have there been in just the last couple years? I don't even blame the cops. They're human..and the process they are being told to follow is direct conflict with even innocent people, to the point of lethal force from both sides on sight (I doubt the Pit Bull was released to give 'em a big lick).
Maybe its time the invasion of a mans home for anything short of violent predatory criminals like armed robbers, murderers, rapists or terrorists become as dead as some of these innocent people who only committed the crime of being home.
Three DeKalb County police officers entered the rear of a house Monday around 7:30 p.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing a possible burglar, according to police and the caller. However, the officers lacked an exact address and entered the wrong home, leading to a dangerous confrontation.

Officer Benjamin Penrosse, who was not present at the shooting, wrote that homeowner Christopher McKinley, 36, "burst out of a closed door" with a pit bull that charged the officers. The report said multiple people opened fire. Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials have said that police killed the dog and shot McKinley in the leg, and that Officer Travis Jones was "likely" struck by police gunfire, causing a serious wound to his hip.

It was not clear Thursday how much weight to give the initial report. DeKalb police turned over the investigation to the GBI shortly after the shooting. GBI spokesman Scott Dutton said there is no evidence that McKinley or anyone else in the house did anything illegal. DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander has acknowledged the officers entered the wrong home.
